New Project

Hi!

I’m working with the fine people at GreenNeko in an open platforming game engine. Rockbot will allow you to create games in the style of classic NES Megaman (1-6, 9,10). In the works of Iuri himself:

Open Rockbot is an game engine programmed in C and using the SDL library, ported for Windows and Linux systems, and also Playstation 2 console. It also consists of an editor, programmed with the Nokia Qt library and available in Windows and Linux.

A Nintendo DS version is also in the works. The gallery[1] [2] [3] has some preliminar art, I will draw some re-interpretations and post here soon.

Failed AA experiment

Was trying to achieve an antialiased output, by hand. I still have much to learn -_- …

(For those of you wondering, the reference is a Slime from the Dragon Quest series).

Windows seven GET!

I’ve been using Windows seven for a week now. I must say it is pretty sturdy. It also found all of  my hardware (printer/scanner, wireless mouse, usb sticks, the whole shebang). Tomorrow morning I’m going to see if it finds my Genius Tablet as well – I’m a sucker for doodling random stuff :P

Fan art: RaPoSa7

Time for some pixely fan art! (and also for trying a new style for a change :) )

This is RaPoSa7, in a quasi-victorian attire (with shades of men in Black :P ). She keeps a blog at raposa7.blogspot.com,. Give a look, say “hi” and leave some grapes on the door, please!

Meet the cast of FFXII… for the NES

Hi there, all three of you. New update.

Sprites for the cast of Final Fantasy XII, NES style.

From left to right: wannabe-sky-pirate Vaan, energetic girl Penelo, consul of Rabanastre Vayne Solidor, Viera warrior Fraan, ex-judgemaster and actual-sky-pirate Balthier, royal knight Basch and princess Ashelia B’nargin Dalmasca, daughter of late King Raminas.

Fake edit: yes, I cheated a little, by using more than 3 colors + 1 transparent per sprite. But Capcom also cheated when they did Megaman, Duck Tales, etc. They usually overlaid another sprite over the player sprite, in order to add little details like eyes and mouth movement.

Fake edit 2: actually, Fran should be entirely doable keeping the 3+1 colors restriction in mind.

Trivia: Balthier’s japanese voice actor is the same guy who does the voice of Jack Sparrow in Kingdom Hearts II.

Still alive (albeit barely…)

Haven’t update in a while because I was having some trouble moving my stuff between my old PC and a new one I just stole got for really cheap.
I’m working on some mockups for “demakes” of famous games. A demake is the canonical oposite of a remake: it is when you redo it in the style of an older gaming platform or simpler hardware. Most of the time it means working with a smaller screen resolution, fewer colors, simpler control schemes, chiptune sound, etc. The folks over at Tigsource hosted a “bootleg demakes competition” sometime ago, and it got some amusing entries, like Hold Me Closer, Giant Dancer (inspired by Shadow of the Colossus) and Soundless Mountain (based on Konami’s survival horror series Silent Hill, complete with NES-styled box art!)

Timeless

And now, something different:

I still have an original Famicom Super Mario Bros. cart in my house, somewhere…
I had one of those “famiclones” (videogames compatible with Famicom/NES cartridges). In my case, it was the “TopGame”, a dual-slot (60-pin Famicom, 72-pin NES) console produced by Gradiente inc (probably unlicensed). I used to play a lot of great games, such as Mario, Baloon Fight, Mach Racer, Green Beret (Rush’n Attack), Metal Gear, Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. The console was really flimsy, any trepidation on the wooden floor of my old house could make the games either reset or glitch up severely. Fun times…

I also remember playing Tiger-Heli (a helicopter-themed shooter) and ending up with infinite lives somehow… in fact, i just looked GameFaqs, but there’s no cheat listed. I know it was not a defective cart, as the likelyhood of a mechanical defect doing things like that is just nonexistent. Maybe there are still secrets to uncover, cheat codes unlisted, lost in the sands of time, just like that? ;)

Ode for a dude walking on the grass

He has red hair,
He walks on the grass.
He uses sunglasses
And he’s a badass!

Edit1: just realized he looks a lot like Tomonobu Itagaki.

Edit2: and he also tiles pretty good (completely unintentional :D )

Godzilla f****** shit up.

As the name says.

Some days I just need to blow off some steam. With a giant atomic beam.

27 unique colors, 64x48x8.

Edit: When a Godzilla movie is bad, it’s good. And when it’s good, it’s really good ;) Any daikaijū for that matter. Also, my kudos to the Tokyo Police Cataclism Division. These guys are the real heroes, because they’ve been rebuilding Tokyo every year, since 1954 at the very least. My hat is off to you guys.

Edit2: Wohoo! Forgot some windows and the perspective is all kinds of wrong!
